THE LAST FRONTIER OF UNCROWDED SURF
Tucked away on the untouched north coast of Papua New Guinea, just a short hop from Indonesia’s Jayapura, Vanimo Surf Lodge is one of the last true frontiers of tropical surf travel. While thousands of surfers fly overhead chasing the same crowded breaks, Vanimo remains quietly off the map — a pristine wave mecca on Australia’s doorstep.
On most days, you’ll share the lineup with just three or four surfers, and it’s rare to see more than half a dozen at any break. This is what makes Vanimo special — a quiet, tropical escape where perfect waves still peel through empty lineups, shared only with friends and a few smiling locals.
WAVES OUT FRONT FOR ALL LEVELS
Vanimo’s surf season runs from November to April, bringing consistent north swells and light winds for clean, glassy conditions. Even the fringe months of May and October often deliver fun sessions, making it one of the few near year-round surf zones in the region.
Two of the best waves break right in front of the lodge. Lido Right, a smooth limestone and seaweed reef you can paddle to straight off the beach, and Lido Left, a faster wall just 300 metres down the sand.
With no sharp coral and a mix of nearby beach breaks, Vanimo offers waves for every level, all within easy reach of your room.
THE AUTHENTIC SURF TRIP EXPERIENCE
Vanimo Surf Lodge is about real surf travel — simple, raw, and unforgettable. Set right on the beach with waves breaking out front, you’ll wake to the sound of the ocean and surf from sunrise to sunset.
Rooms are clean, comfortable, and serviced every three days, with fresh linen, a fan, mosquito net, towel, and drink bottle provided. A foot wash basin outside keeps the sand where it belongs, and boards can be stored in your room, on the veranda, or on the racks beneath your hut.
Power runs until 10pm, so charge your gear early. There’s no Wi-Fi, but local Digicel SIM cards with data plans keep you connected if needed.
This is surfing as it used to be — pure, simple, and real.
ADVENTURE BEYOND THE WAVES
When the surf winds down, Vanimo still delivers. Trekking, fishing trips, and boat excursions to Narimo Island, local breaks, or waterfalls can be arranged through the Lodge Manager, with prices listed on the chalkboard and added to your tab.
Join our local guides for the popular Waterfall Trek — a two-kilometre walk upstream through clear jungle streams to a series of refreshing falls. Bring shoes with grip, water, and a sense of adventure.
Our in-house guide also runs fishing, snorkelling, and game-fishing trips in pristine, untouched waters. For something different, the Indonesian border is just 45 minutes west and can be visited with the right visa.
